MENTAL HEALTH: SOCIAL ANXIETY

WHAT IS SOCIAL ANXIETY?

Social phobia disorder (social anxiety) is a disorder where a person has an overwhelmingly excessive fear towards social situations/environments. When feeling anxious in a social environment intense nervousness causes self-consciousness to increase due to the fear of being analysed, criticised or even being approached by others.

  CAUSES OF SOCIAL ANXIETY?

Although the precise medical cause of social anxiety is still unknown, current research explains that social anxiety can be caused by environmental factors such as negative past experiences especially psychical or verbal abuse. Having an overreactive amygdala may also increase social anxiety. An amygdala is a structure in the brain which controls fear responses. When your amygdala is overreactive it creates a false sense of  danger  causing  you  to fear situations  that aren't necessarily dangerous which may lead to increased social aniexty.
